All international and out-of-state students under the age of 18 are required to participate in the IA Host Family Program. This program provides students with a supportive and welcoming “home away from home” experience. We carefully select host families to ensure they offer a comfortable, safe, and encouraging environment for students to live, study, and train. Each home undergoes a thorough inspection and approval process by IA staff, and host parents have passed background checks at the local, state, and national levels. For details on costs, please see the Tuitions & Fees page. For specific questions or concerns, feel free to contact Carley Rozpedski by email or at 760-250-1661.
Host Family Program: Frequently Asked Questions
What does my Host Family provide?
Your Host Family will supply housing, bedding, towels, laundry detergent, meals, and basic toiletry items. Students are responsible for providing their own protein meal shakes, supplements, personal grooming products, insulated lunch box, school supplies, sports equipment, racket stringing, tournament fees, travel expenses for tournaments, shoes, and clothing.
Do I need a credit card?
Your parent or guardian will need to provide you with general spending money for tournament fees, racket stringing, medical expenses, and extracurricular activities.
Do I have to do my own laundry?
Yes, students are expected to wash, dry, fold, and put away their own laundry.
Do I have to cook my own meals?
Lunch and dinner are prepared by the house parents. The pantry and fridge are stocked with quick breakfast items, such as cereal, toast, oatmeal, and fruit, which you can prepare yourself.
Can I drive my car?
First, confirm that your host family has space for an additional vehicle. With permission from your parent or guardian and a valid driver’s license, you may drive your own car.
Can I ride with friends?
Your parent or guardian must sign a waiver for you to join outings where another licensed teen will be driving.
Can I have friends over?
Visitors are allowed with the house parents' permission and are welcome in the common areas. Friends of the opposite sex are strictly prohibited from entering the bedrooms. Violation of this rule may lead to disciplinary action or even expulsion from the program. Visitors are expected to treat the home and furnishings with respect.
What if I require medical attention?
Your parent or guardian should provide the house parents with your medical insurance card and a letter for host parent to approve emergency medical care. Your Host Family will help you make medical appointments and take you to the doctor. Medical expenses are your responsibility. For emergencies, always dial 911.
Can I spend the night elsewhere?
Specific permission from your parent or guardian is required for any overnight stays outside of the host home, except for out-of-town tournaments.
Do I have a set bedtime?
All students must follow the Host Family’s curfew and lights-out guidelines, which will be established before your stay. You are also expected to respect your roommate’s schedule by keeping noise to a minimum.
What if I have to take medication?
All prescription and over-the-counter medications should be listed in your registration paperwork. Prescription medications must be stored and dispensed by the house parent or the IA school nurse during the school year. Over-the-counter medications should be properly labeled and securely kept by the student.
Will I have my own room or bathroom?
A private room or bathroom is not guaranteed. However, you will have bathroom privacy, your own bed, and a suitable environment for rest and study.
What if I take supplements?
All supplements must be approved by your parent or guardian and listed on your registration paperwork.
Are there room inspections?
Yes, room inspections may be conducted randomly by house parents or IA coaching staff. Students are expected to keep beds made, dresser tops clear, and floors tidy.
Does my Host Family provide transportation?
Your Host Family will handle daily transportation to and from school and local tournaments (1 hour drive time). Arrangements for transportation and lodging at out-of-town tournaments should be made with your coach. Host parents are not obligated to forfeit every weekend for tournaments so make arrangements in advance.
